A Raw Multi-layered Woodcut offers a clashing visual experience
Michael, thankfully, got a little carried away with this 6-block print (originally planned for 3) on mulberry paper, then applied the thin paper through the process of chine-collé onto a larger, thicker sheet of BFK. This woodcut's bright fiery colors are overlaid with cool greens bringing balance to a clashing contemporary artwork inspired by extreme forces of nature.
The artist currently works in both Providence RI, and Nantucket MA where he creates abstract oil paintings, etchings, and woodcuts drawing on experiences and sensations of the ocean, and natural world. Michael writes "I am most often lost in the process of painting, struggling to find a way out and feeling very much a beginner until that moment of clarity. For a long time now, my work has found a resolution in a kind of illuminated landscape. Spaces of color and light akin to the mountains and seas of my travels open up between tectonic plates of color and form".
