An impressionistic playground is set in a pastel land of warm pinks and mint green. It’s pure yellow slide, a joyful escape against the more complex dense colors built up around it through the printing process.
This print is a reduction woodcut, which is a relief printing process that uses one block of wood to create the image. A little bit of the wood is carved away, inked up, and then printed for each layer of color. Lighter colors are printed first, and large sections end up being printed multiple times. This results in a harmonious surface with sections containing complex colors.
Guimi’s most recent work has been inspired by her son and her experience with motherhood as she raises him while being a full-time artist, and her aesthetic uses pastel tones with playful and dreamlike imagery. This reduction woodcut was based on one of the artist’s oil paintings with the same imagery.
